The Vibes?

Escape the hustle and bustle of the city and step into Rake’s cafe bar. The decor makes sense once you come to know the story, but without the background info, you might feel like you’ve entered into an urban rainforest. We were situated in The Parlour, a comfortable room perfect for cocktails, a meal or working lunch.

We drank?

We decided to leave our fate to the waiter, who made suggestions of their cocktails based on what we like to drink. We were impressed.

The Gaming House – whiskey, red vermouth, campari & cognac for the most intriguing amusement.

The Marriage – gin and cloudy vegan sake paired with coconut, lychee syrup & lemon for this seductive encounter .

We ate?

Vegan Cauliflower Wings – *recommended* Crisp, saucy and flavourful, a great alternative for vegans.

Corn fed Chicken and Chorizo Croquettes with saffron aioli – the outer coating was crisp, and the inside was an explosion of flavour, perfectly paired with the aioli.

Buttermilk Chicken Burger – Crisp chicken, with a sweet and sour chipotle sauce. Unconventional but plays off well.

Devon crab linguine – If you don’t mind the texture of shredded crab, and love a chilli and garlicky linguine, you’ll love this dish. The cherry tomatoes were a delightful addition, but be wary that this dish is very rich! (You’ll want to save room for dessert.)

Moist chocolate cake, mascarpone ice cream, marsala caramel – A very dense but (true to its name), moist chocolate cake; perhaps more of a brownie. The marscapone ice cream was thick and indulgent, whilst the marsala caramel added a sweetness to the palate.

Fresh mango & mint salad, raspberry sorbet – Here’s what we recommend: try the cake and the raspberry sorbet together. Thank us later! On its own, the fruit salad is a delightful way to end the meal, light on the stomach and tasty on the tongue. The peppermint crumble is a great refresher, and the sweet mango is a crowd pleaser.

Our Thoughts?

We loved it! If you’re looking for great cocktails, a long relaxed lunch or just a space to escape the city, Rake’s is for you.
