REVIEW: L’ortolan Restaurant

Situated in the countryside of Reading, Berkshire is the Michelin Star L’ortolan Restaurant, a stunning red brick Grade II listed building. Placed down a country lane, this spot is the perfect place for a break from the hustle and bustle of London City. With a stunning terrace looking out onto the landscaped green surrounding the restaurant, we enjoyed a refreshing cocktail in the sun before heading into the restaurant for the 6 course meal. The service was impeccable and the staff ensured that our first experience in the restaurant would definitely not be the last!

As L’ortolan have had a number of Michelin star chef’s in their presence as well as Tom Clarke – The head chef currently, we knew we were in for a treat … and we were not disappointed. Having entered the restaurant with high expectations we were greeted with a number of picturesque dishes, decorated with a number of elements to compliment the flavours and textures of the food. Each plate that made its way into the table each had a different character with attention down to the finest detail.

Each plate had a story of its own, paired with a wine suggested by the wonderful GM who looked after us throughout the whole dining experience. From presentation my favourite dish was the dessert by far – Vanilla Parfait, Streusel and Strawberries. The dish was fresh and enticing with an additional crunch from the layer underneath. Next was the lamb, cooked to perfection – it was soft and pink, paired with some crunchy carrots, Zucchini and a light gravy.

Private Dining

The L’otolan has three unique rooms available for private hire; The Champagne Room (12 guests), Glass Room, and Wine Cellar. All of these rooms can be used to celebrate your special occasion including family celebrations to corporate events. Prices start at just £45.00 per person with no additional cost of exclusive hire.

Reading’s only Michelin starred restaurant L’ortolan turns 18 on Wednesday September 11th. In celebration, for two nights only (11th & 12th September), a special menu bringing back the most popular dishes from throughout the restaurant’s history will be on offer, along with a very special guest in the kitchen.

Joining head Chef Tom Clarke, L’ortolan’s former head chef Alan Murchison, (who headed up the kitchen for 14 years and was at the helm when L’ortolan was first awarded its Michelin star in 2003), will return for this one-off collaborative kitchen effort to mark the milestone. Together the chefs will re-create some of L’ortolan’s greatest menu hits since opening. Alan has been integral to L’ortolan’s history and success, overseeing the kitchen until 2014.
